Chafee (R-R.I.) have become the ninth and
tenth senators respectively to cosponsor
the Gay andLesbian Civil Rights Bill in the
U.S. Senate.

NGLTF Conference

Washington, DC, July 7, l988...The
National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
(NGLTF) will host a national conference
for gay and lesbian organizations on No-
vember 18-20, 1988 in Washington, DC.
The conference, entitled CREATING
CHANGE: A NATIONAL CONFER-
ENCE FOR GAY & LESBIAN ORGANI-
ZATIONS, is open to all gay and lesbian
organizations.

The conference will be held at the
Hotel Washington, Pennsylvania Avenue
and 15th Street NW, Washington. Regis-
tration fees will range from $50-$100
depending on the size of an organization’s
annual budget.

Lesbian Marine convicted

PARRIS ISLAND, SC, July 14,
l988...Marine Cpl. Barbara Baum, 23, was
convicted of sodomy, obstruction of jus-
tice, and committing indecent acts with
women and was sentenced on June 10,
1988 to one year in prison.

Letters urging that Baum’s conviction
be overttuned and her sentence waived

More Anti-Gay Violence

Washington, DC, June 7, l988...An
NGLTF report released today showed a
record high of seven thousand and eight
(7,008) incidentsof violence against gays
in 1987, as compared to 4,946 incidents
reported in 1986. Incidents included ver-
bal harassment, intimidation, assault,
police abuse, vandalism, arson, bomb
threats and murder. The reported violence
was perpetrated by lone individuals, gangs
and organized hate groups, and occurred
in a variety of settings—on the street, in
school, on campus, in jail and prison, and
even in the home.

Gays Sue NYNEX

New York,N.Y., June 15, 1988
...Lambda Legal Defense and Education
Fund, Inc. has filed a discrimination
complaint against NYNEX, the telephone
company serving New York State and New
England, for refusing a request to establish
a “Gay and Lesbian Organizations” listing
in the New York City Yellow Pages.

The suit, on behalf of The Lesbian and
Gay Community Services Center, Heri-
tage of Pride, and Gay & Lesbian Alliance
Against Defamation (GLAAD), all located
in New York City, alleges that the refusal
violates the New York City ordinance that
prohibits discrimination in public accom-
modations on the basis of sexual orienta-
tron.

Marine appeal upheld

Tacoma, WA...On February 10,
1988, a San Francisco court ruled in favor
of Perry Watkins in the case of SSG Perry
J. Watkins vstheU.S. Army. The Circuit
Court stated that homosexuals, do consti-
tute a suspect class and so are protected
under the Equal Protection Doctrine. This,
if upheld, would be the first time in the
history of the U.S. judicial system that
homosexuals were granted protection of
their rights.
