MOTG frompage 10 treatment of heterosexually transmitted AIDS. “There is a heterosexual epidemic of AIDS right now, among the female sexual partners of IV drug users in NY andNJ. But you won’t, I’m certain, see them on the cover of ‘Time’ because they are poor black and Hispanic women who live in the Bronx.” Shilts urged the audience to take the epidemic seriously and not to be compla- cent about the fact that there are only 25 cases in Vermont, noting when he began covering AIDS in early 1982, “there were 60 cases in the San Francisco Bay Area, just 330 cases of AIDS in the United States. Today in the city of San Francisco alone there are nearly 5,000 cases, and 52,000 in the entire country.” Shilts’ visit was sponsored by Univer- sity, Health and Community organizations. The proceeds, $440, were donated to Ver- mont CARES. In addition to speaking at Ira Allen Chapel, Shilts also attended a post speech reception, and the UVM GLBA “Homo- hop” fundraiser at Pearl’s later in the eve- nmg. During the trip, he also met with Terje Anderson of Vermont CARES, and with Vermonters with AIDS. Anderson, who has known Shilts for several years, said he was “extremely pleased with the visit and the response it received. We can learn from history, and Randy’s visit will help us avoid repeating many of the same mistakes in Vermont that were made earlier in other places. He hfilped wake up a lot of people who didn’t think we needed to worry much about AIDS in Vermont.” “As ls” on Tour The statewide tour of “As Is”, the award winning play about AIDS , continues through Vermont in March. The produc- tion, presented by the Lost Nation Theater Company and Shoestring Theater Com- pany will play in Johnson, St. Johnsbury and Putney during March. There were per- formances in Barre, Burlington, Castleton and Waitsfieldin February. The play is about two lovers, Rich and Saul, and what happens to their relationship after Rich is diagnosed with AIDS. The play is full of humor, spirit and style, as it addresses the fears, sense of loss, and the hope which the couple experiences. Each performance is followed up with discussion by panels of experts. Ticket prices and showtimes vary by location. Please see calendar to determine when the show is in your area.
