Out in the Mountains UUs Brave Snow for Portland Convocation The fourth annual Continental Convo- cation of the U.U.L.G.C. (Unitarian- Universalists for Lesbian and Gay Con- cerns) met in Portland, Maine, February 12-14, 1988. Only one person from the Vermont delgation was able to attend. Inspite of a 2- foot snowstorm that blanketed the north- east, the Rev. Brendan Hadash, of Barton, VT, got through. The telephone lines re- mained intact making this report possible. Fred Rabidoux and Chas Grindle, two tireless individuals, organized this event and saw it through to a very successful con- clusion. They received much-needed help from Betsy Black, national secretary of the U.U.L.G.C., who lives in nearby Concord, NH. S he helped immeasurably inall the last minute changes due to the snowstorm. Members of the local congregation pro- vided much assistance, cooperation, and good-will. All the horrors of travel energized the survivors, intensifying feelings and activ- ity during the week-end. After a 9:30 worship service Saturday morning, there were several workshops. Saturday afternoon, a second worshi; service was held, followed by the keynote speech at 1:30 by Ellie Haney. Dr. Hanq is a feminist and spiritualist leader, hot the Bath (ME) area, with a Ph.D. in ethiq from Yale. She founded a Maine groupti free women from patriarchy. She spoke about our need to change ourselves andli release ourselves from patterns that donl fit. The challenge in life, Ms. Haney stated is to bring out the true spiritual self tht dwells inside and shed roles and attitudei learned in one’s upbringing. Saturday afternoon included mot workshops and discussion of the resultsd a national survey of UU members‘ attitudt towards gay rights. Saturday evening Sill much sharing and fellowship. Sunday’s events included the regult worship service, Chas provided great mu sic. Especially moving was a male due from opposite ends of the choir loft; it wt a love song, to each other and to the congre gation, and it brought tears and unpreci dented applause. Keith Kron, participant from Ken tucky, made a strong pitch to hold net year’ s convocation at his church in Lexing ton. He came armed with pamphlets all even a written endorsement from hi church and his minister! Jimmy has recently spent 2 years at Bally's Casino/Hotel in Atlantic City. He has been on Phil Donahue, is about to appear on Hollywood Squares and can be seen in the motion picture Too Outrageous. Now the Jimmy James show has expanded to include the famous voices of Eartha Kitt, Cher, Diana Ross, Judy Garland, Barbara Streisand and others.
