Hopefully this will reunite Sharon with Karen Th- ompson, who has been fighting in court, speaking around the country, raising money for legal fees, and working full time.for the past two years. Sue Wilson told the gathering in New York that if Sharon Kowalski had had a signed power of attorney indicating her desire to have Karen appointed as her guardian were she to become incapaci- tated, much of this tragedy probably would not have happened. Wilson pointed out that clear written evidence of a ward’ s wishes as to guardianship are almost impossible for a court to ignore under most guardianship laws which require courts to honor the wishes of the ward, if known. Hopefully the Kowalski case will motivate more people in our community to execute pow- ers of attorney as to medical care decision- making. Also, Wilson agreed that coming out to one’s parents is very important. The Kowalski parents had to cope with their daughter’s sudden paraplegia at the same time they had to begin the process of deal- ing with her identity as a lesbian: the two together were too much for them. Had Sharon and Karen been out of the closet V before the accident things might have been different. Forsberg Center Walter I. Zeichner M.A.C.P., N.C.C.
