Growing up with two gay parents has doubtless affected the way Miguel sees the world, and , from all I can tell, affected him favorably. We have always been open with Miguel. In turn, he has always responded with a child’s infinite capacity to understand and with natural uninhibited curiosity. I can easily remember my shock the first time he asked a male house guest "Are you going to sleep with my Daddy?" I grew used to being awakened by a boun- cing little boy on my bed at 6:30 am, and warned overnight guests they could expect the same. Being a father sometimes interfered with my social life, to be sure. Child care needs became paramount, and while day care was handled by the university, good reliable baby-sitters were few and far between. Dates were more likely to be dinner at home and a bottle of wine than a night out on the town. I hardly ever made it out to the bars, and actually ended one promising affair with a man who sin- cerely disliked dinner conversation with a three year old. It wasn't a hard choice to make. Perhaps the most challenging test of our extended family structure came when J.P., an ex-lover of mine who lived in the same city as Maria and Miguel, was diag- nosed with A.I.D.S. A life-time friend of Maria’s, he lived with them for the last eight months of his life. Miguel under- stands what A.I.D.S. is, and played a very active role in taking care of LP. He was, by all reports, a real joy for J.P. and displayed great patience and understanding while much of the center of attention in the house shifted from him to LP. If that episode provides any indication, Miguel is growing up to be a son we will be proud of. Of course the teenage years still lie ahead, and none of us know what they may bring, but it is hard for me to imagine that such a bright, open and determined little boy will be anything other than an exceptional young man. I’m look- ing forward to the next nine years as much as I’ve enjoyed the last nine.
