May I986 - page 7 They’re everywhere, they’re everywherell Large numbers of heterosexuals have been spotted recently in some areas of Vermont. In order to deal understandingly and compassionatcly with these people, an "Out in the Mountains" staff member has compiled the most-often asked questions about heterosexuality. What is heterosexuality? Heterosexuality is an alternative form of sexual orientation in which persons show an emotional and physical attraction for members of the opposite sex. What causes heterosexuality? Many researchers this problem. One theory male heterosexuality to childhood seduction by an older woman. Such "dirty old women" often loiter around playgrounds, and with offers of candy, entice innocent little boys into lives of moral depravity. Other theories attribute heterosexuality to hormonal imbalance and demonic possession. have explored attributes Where do heterosexuals meet? When "horny," male heterosexuals often go to "straight" bars to meet female heterosexuals. Heterosexuals also have their own subculture of businesses, newspapers, social organizations and, even, their own churches. How do heterosexuals make love? Concern for public morals prevents a candid discussion of this shocking and, at times, lurid subject. However, it can be stated that the heterosexual couple engages in a wide variety of sex acts. It is believed that one of these acts is responsible for the current overpopulation problem. Can heterosexuals relationships? form lasting Yes. Some heterosexual relationships last for months, maybe years. In some cases the couple chooses to have their relationship sanctioned with a civil or religious ceremony. is it true that all heterosexuals are truck drivers and housewives? Actually, only a small percentage of the heterosexual population conforms to the stereotype of the aggressive, hairv- chested male and the demure, timid female. Most heterosexuals look just like normal people. They may be found in every possible occupation and socio-economic class. Your doctor or clergyperson may even be heterosexual. Have any heterosexuals made important historical and cultural contributions? Archaeological evidence indicates that heterosexuality flourished in many ancient civilizations. King Henry VIII of England was a notorious heterosexual. The great American statesman, Richard Nixon, and his wife, continued, page 11 UVM students attend conference At Brown University by Stephanie Shear ,Ten UVM students and alumnae/i joined 670 students from more than 12 schools across New England at Brown University in Providence , R.l., for the third annual Unity Conference. The meeting of the North Eastern Lesbian and Gay Student Union began with performances by humorist Kate Clinton and singers Romanovsky and Phillips. Students were housed in the homes of community members and in university residence halls. Contrary to some newspaper reports, no commotion was made by Brown students in the dorms. Although their lounge and television rooms were occupied, students were friendly and interested in the conference. A day of workshops, films, discussions and receptions followed the opening entertainment. The day opened with a rousing speech from Flo Kennedy. (1 had the pleasure of later eating with Ms. Kennedy at the conference banquet. Anything can and will come out of her mouth.) U.S. Representative Gerry Studds spoke at the banquet and reminded us all that such meetings of lesbians and gays would have been unheard of ten years ago - five years at many schools. Many of the workshops dealt with AIDS issues and non- discrimination protections. Networking, future conferences, and bisexuality were featured on both days of the workshops. Next year's conference will be organized by the caucus of New York schools. Columbia University will host the three day event. We left the conference very positive about our futures and having made some new friends and enjoyed a bit of freedom. The most moving scene at the conference came during the parade. As we walked arm and arm through the campus, led by the Freedom Trail Marching Band of Boston, we noticed the varied student response. In one window, at the top floor of a dormitory, a young man waved a triangle at us. feeling l7oLlTtClPt'\l9 izesvowu e~/ ».. LA. flmwe A DEAF ear: Mp. puvolwtr Helms | tlov-it Gtt.
