Send your letter to PO Box 1078, Richmond, VT 05477, or e~mail it to editor mountainpridemediaorg Dear Howard Dean . The Town Report for Putney came in the mail the other day. I just wanted your to know that it lists 39 civil ‘unions regis- tered through our town clerk, and there is no sign of locusts, famine, earthquakes, plague, cross-bumings, or dying sugar bushes. I know this has been on some people’s minds for the past year. The claims of God’s wrath were quite specific. I may not have a good senseof _this all since I live -so far south, but I.do not havejthe impres- sion that God is out of work or ignoring our beautiful state. I think -there may simply have been some mistaken transla- tions about God’s job descrip- tion. We are doing OK down here in Putney. As you may recall, at last year’s town meeting our town voted in favor not of Civil Unions, but of gay mar- riage, the only Vennont town to do so, if I recall correctly. I am not disappointed with the Civil Union law. I under- stand that mainly people can only understand the neighbors they have over for coffee and cake. We have lots of coffee and cake here in Putney, so mainly there is a generous idea of who your neighbor is. I think that’s an idea God likes about Putney. But that’s just my opinion. Now, this new bill to equate gay couples with incest to out- law even the idea of gay mar- riage, well, I am sure you can see that this is just plain mean. My husband, Marshall Brewer, and I were married by ' our Quaker Meeting in Putney. We’ve been together 15 years now. I’ve had a ministry in Events Activities Advocacy Education Networking Buyer's CO—Op Vermont People With AIDS Coalition P.O. I’m sure you know all "about trauma after last year’s legisla- tive session. Marshall finds graduate stu- dents for the School for International Training. He’s just back from Bangladesh where he saw SIT programs helping to empower ;women as leaders and wage earners. Such change increases the civil benefits for all society in that country. ' I V ._ . ’ If Vermont is not ready to give us a state marriage certifi- cate, we understand. But please:do'.n’t'let thempass a law saying our life together is the same as incest. That would hurt too much.. It would make usiwonder whether God ever leaves Putney to shed light in other places. John Calvi Putney, VT .f Con/e(y' V V V V ‘E?FRO1§3I*§THFf?1€ONNECTi’Ci3ffrRI_YV « . .
