REVIEW BY WALTER I. ZEICHNER Having myself written a book that employs autobiographical vignettes to demonstrate concepts, Ted Mouradian’s Best In Life had a familiar feel to me as I read through it. It is obviously a very per- sonal project. Enjoyable bits about Mouradian’s life, his wife and daughters, and their experiences are dispersed throughout the books, and they are very effec- tively used. The basic message of the book is not a new one: love your- self, conduct yourself with digni- ty, take responsibility for yourself and your actions, do no harm, live and let live, and not only will you be a happier person, but one who adds joy to the world. Mouradian also has a buddy, Humphry the Camel, who exists as a cartoon character in the book and as a stuffed toy/business metaphor in Mouradian’s work as a motiva- tional speaker. Humphry is referred to many times to illustrate points like “Humphry knows he isn’t the best looking , of creatures, or fastest or smartest, but he’s proud of being the best camel he can be.” ‘ i 0 My only criticism is that in an effort to get through to as many of his readers as he can, Mouradian is a bit simplistic. This book is deceptively simple, in fact, because the life lessons Mouradian explores and expounds upon are all of a profound nature. Best in Life is a lighthearted, friendly book. I would most heartily recommend this book to people who have not been steeped in modern psychology or the self—help move- in ent. For those people, however, Best in Life can serve as a pleasant reminder to do what it takes to be conscious and to take care of . oneself as a route to healthier, more satisfying relationships with others.V BEST in LIFE Tod .\l()lll‘&l(lli1l) .\'l'(il‘llllll(‘S Arts l’l'()j(‘(‘iS Pi‘o(lti(‘iions, pul). 168 i)2i§>‘(‘s. inass inzirkci })il})(‘l‘l)k1(‘l\' $13.93 rmzx’-‘o°'{zJz,§ egg , August 2000 | Out in the Mountains [33 L\i‘»L‘RS|TY LANE 20,00 l 9 / 2 7 / O O Aquila Theatre in Ct/runo ale Bergerac‘ 9 / 2 8 / O O Aquila Theatre in Mun‘/7 Ado About Nothing IO / -i / O O Lark String Quartet IO / l I / 0 0 Piano lazz with Nlarian .’\lt‘PaI‘tland |O/ I '3 / 00 Doc Watson with guest Rani Arho I O / 2 7 / 0 0 Red Priest Baroque Ensemble I 1/ I0 / O 0 international Cliltéli Nitiht l 2 / l / O O Frederic Chiu. piano I2 / 8 / O 0 Waverly Consort Christmas I / 2 5 / Ol Eileen lvers. celtir fiddler 2/ 9 / 01 _.~ London City Opera in Carmen 2/ l4 / OI Terra Nova Consort it) l’\ A l.% 2001 II'it' or VERMONT SERlES SEASON ‘: 2 / 2 I / 01 l Turtle Island String Quartet. jazz 2/ 2 3 / Ol l Andreas Staier, harpsichord i 5 / 9 / O l Sarhand. medieval/sephardic music 3 / IO / OI Ruverishead.
