Show moreLouis L. McAllister photographed people and places near Burlington, Vermont for 60 years. He was born in Columbus, Nebraska on October 16, 1876, the son of Julius S. McAllister (born 1841 in Lincoln, VT) and Rosette Gould (born in Vermont in 1851). Julius McAllister worked as a photographer and dentist in Washington D.C., Bristol, Vermont and Columbus, Nebraska. Around 1895, Julius, his third wife Amy, and their children left Nebraska for the Union Soldiers’ Colony in Fitzgerald, Georgia. By 1900, Julius and Amy were divorced, and Amy and her stepson Louis were working as photographers in Thomasville, Georgia.
In 1907 Louis McAllister married Cora Shepard (born about 1872 in Vermont) in Holland, Michigan. By 1910, they were living in Queen City Park in South Burlington, Vermont, where Louis established a photography studio. The McAllisters moved to Burlington, and by 1919 they lived at 47 N. Winooski Avenue. They continued to occupy a summer cottage at Queen City Park, and were active in the Queen City Park Association, which held spiritualist camp meetings annually. McAllister conducted his photography business from home until his death in 1963.
McAllister’s “trademark” was his panorama camera which made him familiar to all sorts of groups ranging from graduating classes to state police to summer camp groups. In addition he did print 8 x 10 photos, many of which document building construction and Burlington Street Department projects, as well as group and individual portraits.
The L.L. McAllister Collection includes portraits, construction projects, buildings, businesses and events in the Burlington area covering the period ca. 1920-1960. The collection also includes photos of street, bridge, airport and sewer construction and repair, as well as group portraits of clubs, schools, etc.

The pavement area as far as shown in this view is only a temporary surface. No telford base or penetration surface having been constructed for the last 1,000 feet because the project for the sewer and water mains was not continued to the City limits as originally intended. All grading was done, however, and a corrugated metal culvert with concrete headers and catch basins was constructed in the ravine as shown by the location of white guard posts in the center of this picture.

The two inch wearing course of crushed stone has just been started in the left of the picture. The stone rubble at the right is for use in continuing the construction of the base. The heavy cut just northerly of the bridge can be seen in the distance as well as the rock quarry at the extreme right where all stone rubble for the telford base is being quarried.

Show moreJanuary 12, 1942. Hayward Street Improvements: This view shows Hayward Street looking north from the intersection of Catherine Street. The old curbs and gutters have been removed and broken up for use as telford base. A 6" drain tile has been installed on either side of the street three fee below grade of top of curb and one foot back of curb. The drainage trench has been backfilled with crushed stone to within one foot of the surface. Tar paper has been spread over the crushed stone before backfilling the remainder of the trench to prevent dirt from filtering down into the stone drain. A 6" sand cushion has been placed over the clay sub-base and an 8" telford stone base has been placed by hand on the sand cushion as seen in the foreground. On this telford course has been spread approximately two inches of 1 1/2" stone which will later be given a penetration of asphalt binder. The power shovel and crane with drop hammer can be seen in the distance excavating the old pavement and sub-base at the intersection of Howard Street. Two new catch basins were constructed at the intersection of Catherine Street to replace the two old ones. More information can be found at the UVM web site Historic Burlington Project, Burlington, Vermont (South of Pearl Street photographs from 1930s 1940s).
